The Crestwood Neighborhood Mural

Crestwood, also known as the Wisconsin Cooperative Housing Association (WCHA) is the oldest neighborhood association in the United States. The community was designed based on the Scandinavian land use model by John Bordner, an experienced land-use planner.

The Crestwood mural emphasizes nature on two fronts. The late Gaylord Nelson, former governor, U.S. Senator and Earth Day founder resided in Crestwood with his family. The title of Eric Rattan’s 3,500 piece handmade tile mural honors our former neighbor and environmentalist. The mural is titled “For Gaylord.” The Crestwood neighborhood was designed in 1936 to include 36 acres of green space, mostly woods. The Coop woods back up to a nature conservancy which has over 100 acres of protected land. The flora and fauna included in the Crestwood mural depict nature as one might find it in this island of nature surrounded by Madison, Wisconsin’s urban environment.

Twenty-five neighborhood children and twenty-five adults participated in a tile-making workshop at Eric Rattan’s studio. Their leaf tiles are part of the finished mural. Fifteen other Crestwood residents were part of the “hands-on” team who moved the 4,000 pound finished mural, mixed concrete, stained the timbers, grouted and more. This represents Eric Rattan's largest group of commission collaborators to date.
